Car shampoo and car soap are often treated as two different products, but the distinction is not always clear-cut. In many cases, manufacturers use the terms interchangeably.
What matters more than the name on the bottle is the formula itself:

Car shampoo is a cleaning product specifically formulated for automotive paintwork and exterior surfaces. It is generally designed to loosen everyday contaminants such as dust, light road grime, pollen and traffic film. A shampoo should do this without unnecessarily affecting waxes, sealants or other protective treatments.
A good car shampoo also provides lubrication. This helps a wash mitt move more smoothly over the surface and reduces friction as dirt is lifted away.
This is important because much of the visible damage associated with washing a car does not come from the cleaning liquid itself. It can occur when dirt is dragged across the paint by poor washing techniques, unsuitable cloths or contaminated equipment.

However, the name alone does not tell you exactly how a product will perform. One car soap may be mild and pH-neutral, while another may contain stronger cleaning agents that are better suited to a deeper wash.

Neither is automatically better.
For a vehicle that is washed regularly and has only light dirt, a gentle, well-lubricated shampoo may be the most appropriate choice. It can clean the surface without using more aggressive chemistry than necessary.
A dirtier vehicle may require a formula with greater cleaning ability, particularly if it has accumulated road film, mud, bugs or other stubborn marks. Even then, stronger is not always safer.
Heavy contamination may require a careful pre-wash, specialised treatment or professional attention rather than simply increasing the concentration of the wash solution.
Some formulas can weaken or remove wax, but the term “car soap” alone does not tell you whether this will happen.
Products with stronger degreasing properties may reduce the life of waxes and some sealants, especially when used too frequently or at an incorrect dilution. By contrast, many modern car soaps and shampoos are specifically labelled wax-safe or pH-neutral.
It is also worth remembering that “pH-neutral” does not describe every aspect of a product’s cleaning behaviour. Correct dilution, contact time and washing technique still matter.

Foam can help distribute the cleaning solution and increase the time it remains on the surface. During a pre-wash, it may also help soften and loosen contamination before the vehicle is rinsed.
However, foam volume alone does not determine cleaning performance or safety.
A product can create impressive foam without providing the lubrication required for contact washing. On the other hand, a lower-foaming shampoo may still clean effectively when used correctly.
Dishwashing liquid is not a suitable substitute for a purpose-made automotive shampoo.
It is formulated for kitchen grease and food residue rather than modern automotive paint, exterior plastics, protective waxes and sealants. Repeated use may unnecessarily degrade protective products and can leave the vehicle without the finish or protection expected from a dedicated car-care formula.
Using a product designed for vehicles is always the more reliable option.
